Just how powerful is the insurance lobby?

Pretty powerful, according to a story in the UK Guardian that claims $380 million has been spent in recent months to influence healthcare legislation “through lobbying, advertising and in direct political contributions to members of Congress.” Senator Max Baucus has personally taken in $1.5 million, and it just so happens he is the chairman of the Senate finance committee that has voted against the public option twice just this week.

Regretfully, it’s become clear by now that Obama is pulling back from the idea of a public option as a way of placating the huge influence of the insurance lobby. This seems to be the only answer as to why there has been little public outcry against insurance reform from the companies themselves during the last few months of hubbub.
